You know, I'll be honest, I don't think they give a damn about public safety, they know exactly the people that they are bailing out. They know that these individuals that are out on already multiple felony bonds and they're helping them get another one. They know that some of these are very violent individuals, and you cannot look at this with a straight face and tell me that you care about the community that you're operating in.

They are allowing people to donate and then they're bonding out violent criminals who are repeat offenders. I mean, this is not the shoplifting a candy bar from Wal-Mart. These are people who are committing murders, aggravated assault.

When you do a postmortem on what happened in Austin, I think it's important to recognize that the mayor and city council there have basically been giving the finger to the hardworking men and women of law enforcement in the Austin Police Department for quite some time, and what they did is they scared the public. They told them we're going to cut services across the board to try to fund public safety, but what the public should really be scared of is the fact that the murder rate is up 88% in Austin. Austin was once a mecca for the arts and music, and now it's a dangerous community and nobody even wants to walk through with their families.

They did everything that everyone across this country is asking for law enforcement to do, they de-escalated and retreated for 15 minutes -- 15 minutes ! They used every non-lethal option available. Multiple bean bag shotgun rounds until they ran out. They used multiple Tasers all while giving verbal commands to Mr. Chavez to give up peacefully that he did not adhere to.

It was clear... Four Houston police officers did not want to shoot Mr. Chavez and did everything in Four Houston police officers power not to.

This has sent a shockwave through our department -- that even if you de-escalate, even if you retreat, even if you follow policy, training and the law, you will still lose your job as a Houston police officer.
